The chronology of Department can be divided into two periods, i.e. pre earthquake period which was founded in 1970 on the bases of Lenninakan First Aid Hospital, and post earthquake period, which was formed on the bases of No 1 Hospital.
As a result of optimization of health care institutions, the Department continued its activities in Caloust Gulbenkian Surgecial Hospital in Gyumri. Since 2012, the Traumatology & Orthopaedic Department functions in Gyumri Medical Center. The Department functioned actively in the period of 1988 earthquake and post earthquake era, during which thousands of patients received treatments. The Department had active participation in military and civil hospitals during liberation war of Artsakh.
Hundreds of wounded soldiers received treatments moving from battlefield to this Department. The Department is the only one in regional health care institutions that was expanded using its strategic importance and became the only functioning Traumatology & Orthopaedic Department in RA Northern sector. Currently the Department has 50 beds, modern rooms, dressing station, plaster cast rooms, conference and consultancy rooms, Operating rooms are equipped with orthopedic surgical tables, arthroscopy and X-Ray devices. In 2014, the Department received a qualification of 3rd category by the Ministry of Health Care.
Following the experience of the leading clinics of Yerevan, the Department staff members presented and published more than 40 scientific and scientific practical articles and thesis. The medical staff of the Department actively participates in international scientific consultancy conferences in a form of direct participation and telemedicine. The Department's medical staff is highly specialized. It has 9 orthopedist traumatologist, maxillo-facial surgeon,microsurgeon, plastic surgeon, ENT doctor, who regularly attend training courses in clinics of Armenia and abroad.
The Department constantly receives technical and consultancy assistance from the specialists of the leading clinics of USA (Detroit), England (Manchester), France (Paris, Lyon), RF (Moscow) and Armenia.
The Department provides 600 in patient treatment and carries out 450 surgeries every year.
The Department has all necessary financial means to ensure contemporary medical care and treatment to its patients. It applies modern methods of conservative and surgical treatments of bone fractures.
Metal platform beds, intramedullary nailing and external fixators (Ilizarov, Hoffman) are used for surgical treatment of bone fractures. Since 1996, hip femoral articular replacement is performed. Special care conditions, such as functional bed, walker and modified toilets, are available for patients who had hip replacement. The Department performs treatment of chronic osteomyelitis through the method of bioplastic and correction of limb length discrepancy. The Department has rich experience in treatment of patients with various injuries. Surgeries are carried out to treat connective tissue disease, soft tissues injuries, restoration of amputated segments through application of microsurgical methods.
The hospital has all necessary clinical instrumental examinations, such as X-ray, computed tomography, sonography and densitometry, to carry out traumatology & orthopaedic service for its patients.
